Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk is taking on the "haters" who think his decision to ride inside at the White House was not so rad.

Hawk briefly skated in the Grand Foyer of the White House on Friday during a day-long visit for a Father's Day celebration hosted by President Obama.

Hawk also took a ride over the checkered tiles of a hallway in the nearby Old Executive Office Building.

He quickly posted photos of his escapade online, touching off a lively debate. By Saturday afternoon, Hawk felt the need to defend himself.

"Wow, haters! My passion, the sport that made me who I am, has allowed me to live the American Dream, disrespects the White House? Not at all,"

"I did no damage, as I also saw cart and trolley wheels rolling along the same floor. Funny how football on the WH lawn yesterday = no drama," he wrote.

Hawk, 41, also known for his hugely popular skateboarding video games, kept his 900,000 followers on Twitter updated throughout the day Friday during every step -- and roll -- of his White House visit.

"Hi. I am inside the White House gates eating Frosted Flakes and about to do press. You heard it here first. Yes, I brought my skateboard," he wrote at 7:34 a.m. sonar_placementId=1280789;adsonar_pid=43749;adsonar_ps=-1;adsonar_zw=165;adsonar_zh=220;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com'; Hawk took his first spin shortly after 9 a.m., on a dare from the actor Ashton Kutcher, he said.

"Snagged a weak manual on the way to CNN while nobody was looking," he posted.

"And here is my exit," he wrote just before 10 a.m., posting a link to another photo. "Supposed to return at noon for the First fathers event if they let me back in."

They did, and at 3:23 p.m. Hawk sent another Tweet: "Town Hall meeting. The message: embrace responsibility as a father. Still can't believe I'm here."

On conservative blogs, and newspaper message boards, Hawk's critics could not believe it, either.

"This has got to be the most disrespectful act so far, by this administration!" a poster using the name Sunshine Nurse wrote on the USAToday's Web site. "What's next, the skeet shooting of the American eagle?"

THIS IS TOTALLY 5BOARDS APPROVED!

Go Skateboarding day June 21st

Happy Go Skateboarding day from 5boards.com

Date: June 21, every single year.

What It’s All About: On June 21 skateboarders around the globe will celebrate the pure exhilaration, creativity, and spirit of one of the most infuential activities in the world by blowing off all other obligations to go skateboarding. OK, most skateboarders do this every day of their lives, but this is just one more reason to blow off your television/computer/video games and go skateboarding!

Skateboarders everywhere will show their love and support for skateboarding by holding fundraisers, contests, protests nad demos. They’ll skate across cities, gather in skateparks, stream into their local skate shop and some will even revel in the solitary act of skateboarding alone at their favorite spot, all bringing together the skateboarding community in the grind heard around the world.

The History: Go Skateboarding Day (GSD), held on June 21 every year, is the official holiday of skateboarding. The holiday began June 21, 2003 as an excuse for skateboarders to make skateboarding their top priority. Go Skateboarding Day began with a few simple skate sessions and bar-b-ques held in skateboarding’s unofficial capital, southern California.

Founded by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC), Go Skateboarding Day gives passionate skateboarders as well as those who are simply inspired by skateboarding, the opportunity to drop everything and get on a skateboard. GSD is a cooperative of decentralized events that take place around the globe. Skateboard retailers, manufacturers, skateparks, distributors, organizations and individuals of all colors, creeds, and attitudes hold skateboarding events to celebrate the holiday. Skateboarders around the world create their own events and traditions to celebrate skateboarding.

Go Skateboarding Day originated as the day for skateboarders to have fun, to raise awareness about the issues we face; to show the world what skateboarding is really all about; to reclaim our culture; and to define skateboarding as the rebellious, creative celebration of independence it continues to be. In the years since that first celebration, the holiday continues to grow, but the mission remains the same: Have fun, go skateboarding!

It has been a big news day over at Quiksilver. The company announced today it was extending 9-time ASP champ Kelly Slater’s contract for five years.

Here’s the release:

Quiksilver, Inc.  today announced that it has signed legendary 9-time ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) World Champion Kelly Slater to a 5-year endorsement contract, extending his sponsorship arrangement with the company and ensuring that the greatest surfer of all time will be sponsored by Quiksilver for his entire competitive career.

Robert B. McKnight, Jr., Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer and President of Quiksilver, Inc., commented, “We couldn’t be more pleased than to continue our long-standing relationship with the greatest surfer the sport has ever known. Kelly has been a fantastic spokesman for Quiksilver, a terrific ambassador and promoter for the sport of surfing and a true friend of the company. Kelly continues to work toward broadening the exposure of surfing through projects such as his upcoming IMAX movie and he’s got some great ideas that we will work on together to enhance the marketability of surfing and bring surf competitions to a broader audience in new and innovative ways. Kelly’s agreement to accept a significant portion of his compensation in the form of Quiksilver stock demonstrates his confidence in Quiksilver and our future prospects. We are absolutely delighted to continue our partnership with Kelly.”

Kelly Slater added, “Quiksilver’s been family to me for so long it’s hard to remember a time before them. It might not come as a surprise to many people that I’ve re-signed with them but there have been major transitions in my life and many changes within Quiksilver. It’s a long relationship and things often alter over the course of time. In our case, we’ve got exciting projects that coincide and are still stoked working and surfing together. These next 5 years and beyond will end up being our best together. As we put our minds and efforts together capturing our lifestyle and creating product that reflects this, I see Quiksilver remaining the industry leader. Revisiting what got us there and breaking new ground into some unforeseen areas, it seems things are on the upswing and it’s a fresh time again.”

Largest indoor wake slider jam

alt On Sunday, May 31st the city of Edmonton was home to the site of something special; the Coors Light Wake Wave presented by West Edmonton Mall's World Water Park. The world's largest indoor wakeboard festival hosted in North America's largest mall. If we're talking volume of water, the Coors Light Wake Wave was approximately ten times larger than the Amsterdam Winch Jam that went off at the Toronto Boat show.

altThe event featured eight riders, seven of which were from the Coors Light wakeboard team riding in the water park's wave pool; Bradey Price, Brad Buskas, Carter Moore, Chris Canuel, Fraser Snell, Kyle Dupris, Leighton Ramsey (Coors wakeboard team) and Evan Stait.

The event format had the riders pulled by one of two winches, hitting a 42-foot A-frame followed by an off-the-wave throw down. The guys were competing for a Coors Light mini fridge (1st place) and a Vestal watch (2nd place) and placement was decided amongst them.

altThe rail jam portion ended somewhat prematurely after the slider sustained too much damage. Just when things were getting good, they got different. After the rail was pulled out of the wave pool, it was time for staff to turn on the waves. At this point, the riders were winched into waves where they exploded off of them much like they would a wake.

The large crowd had plenty of entertainment options. They witnessed a combination of big tricks and big crashes on the water and a large festival area complete with two Coors Light beer gardens and a series of vendor tents. People were busy watching the rail/wave jam, dancing to the DJ's, playing beach volleyball and having a great time!

altWhen the revelry was all said and done, Bradey Price took 1st and Brad Buskas was close on his heels with 2nd place.

The Coors Light Wake Wave would like to thank all of their sponsors: Coors Light, West Edmonton Mall, Spy, Billabong, Swimwear Etc., Edmonton Sport and Social Club, Hudson's, O'Brien, Lost and Jet Pilot.

PKRA adds Australia to the 2010 World Tour

After the announcement of the new Tour stop in New Caledonia this coming November, The Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA), will be adding one more exciting venue to next year’s World Tour. Mauricio Toscano, President of the PKRA after his meeting with the event organizer said that next year’s World Tour will be extended until December as a result of this new development.

“The 2010 World Tour will be one of the most if not THE most exciting tour we’ve had in the history of the PKRA. We’ve just signed a five-year deal with Anton Richardson and Sebastien Talem of Minotaur Sports Management in Queensland, Australia to organize the Australian tour stop at the end of 2010. This event will serve as the yearly final tour event and will be a grand slam event which will have Freestyle, Racing and Wave events,” said Toscano.

The partnership with Minotaur Sports Management will be a long term commitment to bring the PKRA for five years to Australia. This will expand the PKRA World Tour to the new island continent.

The venue will be the world–famous beach of the Australian Gold Coast – Queensland’s most famous stretch of 70-kilometer beach. This stunning piece of landscape is home to some of Gold Coast’s spectacular sporting events including the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro and the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. These significant contests consistently attract tens of thousands of spectators annually. The addition of the PKRA World Tour as a calendar mainstay of Gold Coast events further revitalizes the region’s foothold as Australia’s event capital as well as PKRA’s reputation as the world’s leading professional association of kiteboarders.

Wake Nation owner Peter Kennedy was most worried about what the wakeboarding pros will think about the region’s only cable water park.

At the grand opening celebration on Tuesday, June 2, Kennedy said the pros put his worries to rest. Seven of the top wakeboarding professionals helped celebrate the grand opening.

“This is one of the best cable parks we’ve been to,” said England-native Nick Davies, WWA Wake Park World Series 2009 world champion. “I head of it from other riders giving it a good word. It matches what they said.”

Wake Nation, at 201 Joe Nuxhall Way in Joyce Park, opened to the public last month and is the country’s seventh cable park. It allows people to water ski, wake board, knee board and water skate without a boat. Riders are pulled around the 1,800-foot oval lake by a cable attached to a six-tower cable pulley system.

“They did it so perfect,” said Tom Fooshee, a wakeboarding pro from San Marcus, Texas. “They didn’t cut by on anything, they did it so right.”

The cable park system was invented in Germany, and are about 150 parks around the world.

The reaction has been outstanding, Kennedy said. He said experienced and non-experienced riders have flocked to the water park. Kennedy said about 40 percent of customers have never attempted wakeboarding or skiing.

“It’s been way beyond our expectations,” he said.

Stand-up paddle surfing "Hot Trend"

Stand-up paddle surfing may sound like a scene from a screwball comedy, but no one's laughing in a sports and fitness industry that has hit the recession skids as hard as any other business.

SUP, as it's called for short, looks exactly as it sounds: you stand on a large surfboard and propel yourself forward with a paddle. But, unlike traditional surfing, you don't have to wait for the waves. In fact, SUP, which is wildly popular, can be done on lakes, rivers, pools or any sufficiently large body of water. "It's completely blown up in the past five years and every spring it just blows up even more," says Jim Brewer, 45, a painting contractor who, in October 2008 and in spite of everyone calling him nuts, opened Blueline Stand-Up Paddle Surf in Santa Barbara, Calif., the first fully dedicated SUP shop in the country. "We thought it was phasing out, but then we realized that it's just beginning. It's going mainstream."

Three weeks ago, for instance, while regular surf shops around the country were struggling to stay afloat, Brewer's store sold 16 boards — which start at about $1,500 — in one day. "If I had opened a surf shop eight months ago, we would have been out of business right now, no doubt," he says. Instead, Brewer, who also works as a distributor, fields calls for paddleboards from kayak and surf shops all over the country. "They know that's the only thing they can sell right now," says Brewer, who compares the sport's skyrocketing trajectory to snowboarding, which similarly gained traction in the 1980s and '90s. "A lot of people are using it to help save their business." (Read about how recession is threatening the original Surf City.)

It's generally agreed that the sport has roots in ancient Polynesia, but it didn't really enter the modern mindset until the mid 20th-century, when Waikiki's "beach boys" decided to stand up on their longboards and paddle around with outrigger canoe oars to get a better look at their surfing students, spot far-off waves, take photos for tourists or simply to have something to do on flat days. It wasn't until the late 1990s that the modern explosion began, thanks to big wave surfer and exercise guru Laird Hamilton picking up SUP and publicizing it as simultaneously adventurous, peaceful and a solid form of core conditioning for surfers and non-surfers alike. (Read an interview with surfing legend Kelly Slater.)

Since then, it's attracted everyone from the "little old lady to the hardcore guys," says Brewer, and become the new favorite sport of celebrities — Julia Roberts recently bought a board at Brewer's shop, joining the paddling ranks of Kate Hudson, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew McConaughey and Lance Armstrong, among others. It's already spawned new manufacturing: the SUP boards are specially designed, longer and wider than traditional boards. Meanwhile, multiple SUP magazines are now being published, races and wave-riding contests are popping up every month, and, as with any new-wave trend, a whole slew of entrepreneurs are trying to cash in, selling everything from boards and paddles to board bags, car racks, and specialized clothing lines.

But while SUP enthusiasts have became a daily dot on the horizon of many a coastal California city, it's the market for lakes and rivers that has everyone really excited, says Oahu native and former carpenter Blane Chambers, 45, whose company Paddle Surf Hawaii was one of the world's first major makers and distributors of paddleboards. "The flat-water market is just growing everyday," says Chambers in his Hawaiian drawl, explaining that his sales rep in Minnesota is "so excited" after doing the rounds at kayak shops in that lake-filled state. "It's crazy how fast this thing is growing. It's in France, Australia, Brazil — anywhere there's water, it's starting."

When Paddle Surf Hawaii started in July 2006, Chambers would sell two or three boards out of his garage each month. Today, after his business grew 900% between 2007 and 2008, the boards are shipped by the container load. Chambers sells about 1,000 per month, including more than 150 a month out of his central Oahu shop. Chambers, who lost 40 lbs from stand-up paddle surfing, says, "We can't expand fast enough. We can't even supply everybody."

One SUP neophyte who did manage to get his hands on a new board is Mike Zapata, 34, the director of sales at a Santa Barbara music technology company, who lives three blocks from the beach. "The problem with surfing is that it's so inconsistent, and I don't have a lot of time," he says. "I needed something that I could count on more." So he bought a paddleboard, and now fits the workout into his daily routine three times a week. "It's been awesome. I really enjoy it," says Zapata, who's lost a couple pounds in just a few weeks. "It's the perfect amount of time to escape and get a little activity in and recharge, and I feel it in places that I don't when playing basketball or doing other activities."

Traditional surfers, meanwhile, aren't always so stoked about the newcomer sport and its practitioners. They see SUPpers as more competition on already overcrowded swells. And many of the the newbies never learned wave-riding etiquette, which involves waiting for your turn and not cutting other surfers off. But Brewer, who grew up surfing and appreciates the concern, says such generalizing is foolish. "We have this saying, 'A kook is a kook,'" he explains. "If he's out there being an idiot on a paddleboard, he's also an idiot on a surfboard."

Politics aside, the foreseeable future looks pretty bright for those in front of the SUP wave. Says Chambers, "When I started the company, it was pretty obvious that it had the potential to be bigger than windsurfing. Then I thought, 'This is going to be as big as surfing.' And now I think it's going to be bigger than windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing — everything put together — because it can be done anywhere."

The International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) and the Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA) have announced today to enter a cooperation with immediate effect. The first sanctioned PKRA event under this new cooperation will be the PKRA KiteMasters Portimao in Portugal.

As of this writing, a sanctioning and cooperation agreement has been signed by both parties, following up negotiations between PKRA Tour Manager Mauricio Toscano and IKA Executive Secretary Markus Schwendtner.

As a result, the PKRA will be bidding farewell to the International Surfing Association (ISA) which sanctioned previous PKRA events.

'The PKRA would like to extend its sincerest appreciation to the ISA Executive Committee for their utmost sincerity in helping the PKRA these previous months and for sanctioning past events including the recently concluded Leucate Tour stop,' said Toscano. 'We will be forever indebted to their utmost graciousness especially when the PKRA was seeking an International Class to sanction our events,' added Toscano.

Markus Schwendtner said, that 'we are happy that we have overcome our differences and that we have achieved our goal now to unite international competition kiteboarding under one umbrella. This enables us to develop kiteboarding with the help and input from all interested parties'.

The PKRA will be governed now by the International Sailing Federations (ISAF) Racing Rules of Sailing and have their world tour included in the unified IKA world rankings, while the IKA agreed to give more influence to the riders regarding the development of rules and judging guidelines, to further unify and develop the sport of kiteboarding.

'We are really looking forward do drive the sport forward with the help of the national associations as well as the professional tour operators, that have done a great job in developing competition kiteboarding in the past years', Schwendtner concluded.

The International Kiteboarding Association is an International Class Association of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF). It is the world wide governing body of kiteboarding, amongst other responsibilities managing the global administration of the sport and combining world events into one united ranking.
